How to order online

  1. Read about our tests or call us to decide what tests are appropriate for your horse.

  2. Fill in your horses' details in the order form and the tests you want, starting from any of our web pages that describe a test you are after (look for the button that says "Provide details and pay"). You can get different tests for each horse if you want. When you complete your order you will be emailed an individualised sample ID sheet for every horse you are testing.

  3. Pay for your testing. We accept credit card payments via VISA and Mastercard, PayPal and bank transfers.

How to take samples

Wash or use wipes to clean your hands before every horse!

Foals and weanlings from birth to six months old: pull a large pinch of hairs from the tail of your foal. DNA is only in the hair roots, so make sure the hairs have roots on them. The hair sample should be sent in a clean paper envelope (our preferred option) or a ziplock bag, and should be labelled with the sample ID you are assigned when you order.

There is no minimum age for taking a foal hair sample. Some breeders choose to take the sample before their new foal stands up for the first time.

Mane hair is not a good option for foals. We require hairs from their tail.

Weanling to adult horses: pull a large pinch of hairs from the mane or tail of your horse or pony. DNA is in the hair roots, so make sure that the hairs have roots on them. The hair sample should be sent in a clean paper envelope (our preferred option) or ziplock bag, and should be labelled with the sample ID you receive when you order.

Ordering from outside Australia

Horses: Australia has extremely tight quarantine restrictions. We accept samples from the following countries (in alphabetical order): Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Don't send hair samples from horses that have an infectious disease. Biosecurity will have a conniption.

Samples from outside Australia should be labelled as being "For in vitro use only".

a great foal hair sample

This large tail hair sample from an older foal is excellent. There are lots of follicles attached to the hairs and it was packed in a clearly labelled paper envelope. The sample could be smaller, we would still be happy with a sample half this size.

We store any unused hair in our archives for five years, in case you want more testing later on.

a great horse hair sample

This mane hair sample from an adult horse is a great one. There are lots of large follicles and it was sent in a clearly labelled paper envelope.

There is no need to send a larger sample than this example. Having hair pulled is not pleasant for the horse so aim to take only what you need.
