W13 is a version of the KIT gene that produces a white or majority white coat pattern. It has been found in Australia in Miniature Horses descended from Sweetwater Picasso Painted Wild.
Sweetwater Picasso Painted Wild was born in 1983 in the USA and was imported to Australia. There is no known link between this Miniature Horse stallion and the Quarter Horse x Peruvian Paso horse in which the W13 mutation was originally identified. If you happen to know of any common ancestors, please get in touch. It would be very interesting to know if there is a link between these W13 Miniatures and the larger W13 horses overseas.
No horses have been identified yet carrying two copies of W13.
Our test is based on work by Hoban et al, 2017, submitted for publication in Animal Genetics.
This adorable foal is by SW Picassos Impressive Chrome Bandit, a W13 stallion.
